TPM has a great slideshow of pictures from the 1948 London Olympics. Notwithstanding today's bad taste that austerity is producing , the 1948 Games were know as the "Austerity" games. No games were held in 1940 and 1944 due to the war and Britain was still in the throes of recovering from WWII. Nothing new was built for the games and everything was held in existing venues...mostly Wembley Arena.
It was also the first games that were televised. Some great pictures.

The opening show was delightful and well done. Good Show Britain! And please accept our apologies for that moronic git Mitt, who we are embarrassed to think might be our next president.
I accept your gracious apology, Karmanot. It seems to me that with a Republican presidential nominee insulting us, and the Democrat President doing the same thing by sending back the bust of Churchill on his first day in the Oval Office, we are not top of the pops 'over there'. I think we should start cuddlin gup to China, I'm sure they would be very grateful for somewhere in the Atlantic to park their new aircraft carrier!
David, the Churchill bust lie has been debunked over and over but the Rethuglicans keep using it. The bust of Winston Churchill is still in the White House it was merely moved from the Oval Office to the Residence and it sits outside the Treaty Room. There is even a picture of President Obama showing the bust to Mr. Cameron in 2010.
Embarrassed to say the least. Horrified is more my feeling.
Honestly, FM, I wonder about you at times! He - The One - couldn't get it out of his sight fast enough. Fair enough, he's entitled his opinion and there are plenty of Brits who share it, but don't try and spin the yarn that it was anything other than an example of his visceral dislike for Churchill and, by implication, for Britain. Fortunately, we are well used to that sort of thing.
Horse hockey David. Winston was replaced by Lincoln and its not like his bust was relegated to the basement.
