Trouble for Moderates

Whoever gets the nomination to replace Justice O'Connor will have a huge impact on the United States for most likely a long time. For the last 20 plus years, Justice O'Connor has been the only vote stopping a major shift to the radical right championed by Tony Scalia and Long Dong Silver Thomas. Her departure spells big trouble in the war against the radical right's complete take over of all three branches of the government. Yes, she is a conservative but she is moderate and a woman. Anybody appointed that is any further right than she will spell big trouble for reproductive rights especially if it is a man. Abortion Rights could be the biggest issue surrounding the nominee and people with a uterus could wind up the big losers.
The Bumbler in the Big House is effectively a lame duck and will not have to face the American public again regardless of his nomination. The yahoos in Congress, on the other hand, have an election coming pretty soon and you can expect devisive issues such as abortion rights to be a major issue in Congress' decision on a nominee. Most people in America are in favor of abortion rights and this can be definining issue for democrats if they will just go after it and quite letting Rove define them on every issue.
I won't be surprised to the see the right try and paint O'Connor as too liberal making it easier for them to try and justify someone further to the right. It's going to be a battle for sure and the fallout could set the U.S. human rights back a hundred years.

Update: Armando over at KOS has some much more definitive information
